Find-out Friday

Good morning Naturalists!

Today we are hosting our Find-Out Friday Live at our new time from 11AM-12PM CST from our Facebook page!  Come ask us your questions, or share your experiences with nature!  This week we'll be exploring forces of nature!

What's Going on at ONSC?

Our Teacher-Naturalists love to get out and explore.  Here's some of the discoveries and spring updates from out here at the Science Center!

Out here in the Ozarks, it wouldn't be springtime without some strong thunderstorms, and this year is no exception.  Check out the hail we got out here!  On the other hand, spring offers us some beautiful sunsets, like this one sent in by our neighbors!  Spring has given us time to weed our native plant garden a little bit, and we can't wait to see these little plants bloom!  The growing plants have given plenty of food to some local moths, including this underwing moth caterpillar. When these guys grow up (not pictured...yet) they're beautiful!  Speaking of moths, this week our teacher naturalists discovered that looking closely can reveal some surprises: these three green moths look like they're the same species until you look more closely.  Only then will you discover that they're all different!  For migration season, we had a flurry of Baltimore orioles visit our fruit feeder early in the week on their travel north.  A gray catbird posed for a photo as well.  These birds sound just like a cat meowing, so make sure to listen for them!

Staff also discovered a snapping turtle on our driveway, an exciting sighting, as they usually like more water than what we have.  Where do you think this one was headed?

Thanks for spending another week with us!  Next week is our naturalist grab-bag week, where several of our staff members have written about favorite topics.  If you have a favorite topic in nature and would like to share what you know, send it to us at Socialmedia@onsc.us and we may feature it here!
