♻︎ Zero Waste in Action: Earth Week Workshop ♻︎

Practical tips, local resources, and community solutions for living with less waste.


Celebrate Earth Week with an afternoon of practical inspiration for living more sustainably. Join speakers from Ozark Natural Science Center, the City of Fayetteville Waste Diversion Division, and Spare Change Free Thrift Store as they share ideas, resources, and strategies to help reduce waste and build a more sustainable community.


This event will explore how individuals and communities can reduce waste through smarter purchasing, composting, recycling, and creative reuse. Each presentation will include time for questions, and the event will conclude with a panel discussion and informal time to connect with the speakers.


Whether you are just beginning your sustainability journey or looking for new ideas and resources, this program will provide practical tips and local information to help you make a difference!

  • Optional: Join us for our Lake Fayetteville clean-up event in the morning!


  • 12:30 - 12:45 PM - Arrival and workshop check-in


  • 12:45 - 1:15 PM - Rose Brown - Founder of the Zero Garbage Challenge

    Living a Zero Waste Life: inspiration and practical ideas for how individuals and families can reduce waste in everyday life.


  • 1:15 - 2:00 PM - Faebyan Shields - Environmental Educator

    Local Recycling & Composting Options: Learn about the recycling, composting, and waste diversion programs available to Fayetteville residents through the City of Fayetteville and the Boston Mountain Solid Waste District.


  • 2:00 - 2:30 PM - Lillian Holt - Founder of Spare Change Free Thrift Store

    Reuse and the Power of Buying Secondhand: Hear about the environmental and community benefits of buying used goods and how the free thrift store model helps keep useful items out of the landfill while making essentials accessible to everyone.


  • 2:30 –-3:00 PM - Panel Discussion

    Additional Recycling & Reuse Options: Explore creative ways to recycle or responsibly dispose of items that are not typically accepted in municipal recycling programs.


  • 3:00 - 3:30 PM - Audience Q&A

    All speakers will participate in a group discussion and answer audience questions about sustainable living, waste reduction, and local resources.


  • 3:30 - 4:00 PM - Informal Q&A and Mingling

    Stay to ask additional questions, connect with speakers, and share ideas with other attendees.


🎟️ Ticket Information

  • Adult tickets (18 & up) = by donation

  • Teen tickets (12-17) = by donation

  • Children 12 and under = Free

    • All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.


All proceeds go to support research, community science, and education at Ozark Natural Science Center.

About Ozark Natural Science Center 

ONSC offers a unique, immersion-based approach to learning about nature and the natural sciences. Students visit us for authentic science learning experiences that are correlated with national and state science learning standards and provide in-depth education in biology, ecology, geology, social studies, and nature art – all while students have fun hiking and experiencing nature. Camp activities include  hikes, team-building, games, art, and small-group activities.


About Rose Brown

Rose has been living without garbage since 2009 when she founded the Zero Garbage Challenge. She provides information, workshops and presentations to the community about household waste reduction and other sustainability topics. She has worked for many environmental organizations, including StreamWatch and The Nature Conservancy, and she is a volunteer Master Naturalist. She currently works as the Executive Director at Ozark Natural Science Center.


About Faebyan Shields

Faebyan Shields is an Environmental Educator for the City of Fayetteville Recycling and Trash Collection Department. With over two decades of experience in sustainable materials management, she has worked with several private and public entities to find a way to translate what looks like "trash" into a valuable sustainable material, providing both economic and environmental benefits for waste reduction, recovery, and diversion.  After work hours you can find her enjoying time with her family and playing somewhere outside.  


About Lillian Holt

Lillian Holt is a UARK Alumni and former para from Holt Middle School. As a Fayetteville Native Lillian seeks to prioritize the needs of locals affected by the rapid expansion of the city while remaining focused on sustainable practices. She currently works as a full time artist alongside her role as executive director of Spare Change Fayetteville. Spare Change seeks to open Fayetteville's first free thrift store built around a community style co-op network and relies on monthly donations to support rent and overhead. Holt will manage this project as it starts up with the hope of expanding nationwide. 


Ticket Refund Policy


  • Refunds up to 1 week before the event: Tickets are refundable minus any applicable fees (processing, administrative, etc.) until 7 days before the event.

  • Refunds within 1 week of the event: For refund requests made less than 7 days prior to the event, a 50% refund will be given.

  • No refunds within 24 hours of the event: Refund requests made within 24 hours of the event are not permitted, except in exceptional circumstances and only with approval from ONSC administration.


*Please note that all refund requests must be submitted in writing to info@onsc.us. Refunds will be processed within 7-10 business days.
